It lights up all the lights to mean the battery is fully charged or close to full for most of the time, then finally you see the first indicator light go away after using about half of the battery. It still works great.
The great thing about it is, you can use it with anything that charges off of a usb cable. It is so easy to charge and use to charge other things.
This battery works great with my ipod. Mine is all scratched up, but that's not a problem.
It is simple to set up, easy to carry, and simple to use. The finish scratches easily, so I have given up trying to protect that.
The only con is that the battery indicator is not the best. As long as you know this is the case, though, you shouldn't be surprised when your battery runs out.
I bought this for my son to use with a iPod Touch 32Mb 3rd Gen. It still shows full charge, so I don't know if he just missed the message instruction, but it's clear the Touch doesn't think this is compatible with charging. When we plugged the charged battery into the iTouch, the Touch produced a message stating this device does not support charging the unit. It appeared to run as an external battery for me for about 5 min, but my son said it would shut off shortly after. Be cautious. Got ours locally at Fry's, not on sale, for $19.95.
I use this external battery as a backup charger for my blackberry curve cell phone while on long distance bicycle trips and camping. Works great given the small size of the battery. It also charges my mp3 player. Pair this with a small solar charger and you have a great solution for backpackers and touring bicyclists.
When it works, it's great. Then it just 100% stopped working. I used this devise 4-5 times without an issue. When you count on it and it's dead, it certainly will cause you to pick anther product next time. I have heard this from other reviews. Seems to be a pattern. That's exactly what I am doing. No more Macally products.
The first one I have is a little longer than this one. This one is a great size for easy pocketing and it is just as great in power as the the first one I bought. For me this was worthwhile purchase.
